If your goal is to play hockey at the college level many of these teams provide excellent development and recruiting exposure which will increase you opportunities for playing college hockey.

The teams in this guide fall into four main categories; Tier I junior A; Tier II Junior A; tier II junior B; and Tier II junior C. Just as the NCAA classification of Division I ,II and III do not necessarily provide on accurate description of the competitive level of a specific college team, these classifications don’t always provide an accurate break down of the completive level of a specific team. Junior hockey is at the top of the hockey pyramid of development and is structured so the best players advance to Tier I junior A where there is no fee to play and the recruiting exposure is greater with advanced competition. Tier I junior A teams generally attract larger audiences and operate at a different fiscal level then Tier II junior A, B and C teams.

Canadian Major Junior A teams play in either the Western Hockey League, The Ontario Hockey league, or the Québec major junior Hockey league. Although these leagues are a prime source for professional players, they are not in any way college developmental leagues. In fact players that either attended a major Junior training or tryout camp for more then 48 hours or play in a major Junior game are denied a minimum of one year of NCCA eligibility. Every year the NCCA is asked to reinstate the eligibility of the players that have played Major Junior A and want to play college hockey. In reading the NCAA News recaps of these requests , I cant recall any that reinstated NCAA eligibility guidelines. If you want to play in college we suggest that you avoid all Canadian Major Junior A leagues and teams.

United States Tire I Junior A teams operate within the NCAA eligibility requirements. United States Tier I Junior A teams are governed by USA Hockey and all teams in the United States Hockey League are now in this category which allows you to play Tier I junior A and maintain you college hockey eligibility. United Sates Tier II Junior A teams are governed by USA Hockey and primarily play in North American Hockey League.

Tier I and Tier II Junior A are big business with individual team franchises fees of low six figures for the NAHL, and six figures for the USHL. Players generally live with host families and pay reasonable billet fee each month to insure that their armature status in maintained. They attend high school or junior college in the team’s community; travel to and from games by charter coach or plane and play in front of large crowds of fans, passionate about their team. All there leagues provided excellent exposure and experience for participants.

These Leagues are actually draft players and have protected lists so that a prospective player will find that a particular team my own his rights in the NAHL. Players and player’s rights are traded from team to team. If as a prospective player, you want to play for a team in you geographic are and find that you rights are held by a team in another state you might be able to initiate a trade of your rights to the team in your area.

Canada Junior A teams are governed by the Canadian Hockey Association and 90% of the leagues are also members of the Canadian Junior A Hockey League. This level operates like the US Tier II Junior A level and the two countries have worked out equitable transfers rules which allow players to move between teams and countries within an approved structure.

United States Tier I and II and Canadian Junior A Leagues place significant numbers of players in US college Hockey programs. When you begin evaluating these programs, we suggest that you get detailed information regarding their alumni. How many of there former players have gone onto play college hockey? This information’s available and is one of the valid means for comparing different organizations. Would you prefer to plat for a team which places one or two players in NCAA division I hockey every year? There are many other factors that you should consider but success in placing recruits in college programs in an important one.

United States Tier II Junior B teams are also governed by USA Hockey and primarily play in Central Sates Hockey Leagues, Empire Junior B hockey League, Interstate Junior Hockey League, Metropolitan Junior Hockey League, Minnesota Junior Hockey League, Or Western states Hockey League. These leagues are also big business although they will generally attract smaller audiences and often will act as a feeder teams for the Tier I and II junior A teams. Every year, however quite a few Junior B players make the jump to NCAA division I.

Canadian Junior B is governed by the Canadian Hockey Association and is similar to Us Tier II Junior B. here again the top teams will place player In NCAA Division I.

United States Tier II Junior C is not normally a feeder for NCAA Division I. Most Tier II Junior C programs are a developmental affiliate of junior A or B team or an extension of young youth organization. There is one notable exception; The Eastern Junior Hockey League. While technally Junior C, this league is organizationally and talent wise closer to Tier II Junior A or tier II Junior B with most teams placing players in the NCAA programs every year.

This guide is intended to provide you with some basic information about the various leagues and teams to assist you as you investigate you junior hockey options. You should contact the leagues and teams for much more detailed information. Since there are many leagues and teams that offer you the opportunity to develop and showcase your talents prior to playing college hockey we recommend that you investigate your junior hockey options just as you would your college options. You will probably spend the entire season, or more, with one team so you should make sure that you will be happy and successful in the situation. Talk to others that have played for the organization and the coach. Will the team provide the development and exposure which you desire of are they interested only in winning the league, provincial or national championships? Does the team have a record promoting all players, or only those in their last year of junior eligibility? Does your style of play fit with that of the coach?

If you hope to attend a specific college, talk to the college coaching staff and get their recommendation regarding your development. If the college coaches have a real interest in you they have vested interest in getting you into a junior environment which provides appropriate development. A specific league or team may be recommended for a verity of reasons including development of skating stick handling, strength, etc.

In order to be classified as junior A a team must compete in a league which is certified by USA Hockey for competition at the Junior A level. Junior A leagues and teams provide a competitive opportunity for the elite player in this age group on a nationwide basis. Their role in the development of the players, coaches, and officials involved is clearly defined. Standards for the operation of the league and teams are rigidly enforced and require that the teams competing in these leagues play a minimum of 45 regular season league games in order to qualify to retain this status.
The decision by the USHL to pursue Tier I re-classification was a secret to no one. Still, misconceptions regarding the rules and regulations that would govern the league were everywhere. Parents, players and coaches clung to tidbits of rumor, creating a storm of controversy. Worse yet, people who viewed themselves as competition to the USHL latched onto the rumors and peddled them for their own perceived benefit. The resulting stir was good fodder for chat rooms but it did little for the advancement of hockey in the

<place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">United States</country-region></place>. Let’s dispel the mysteries. Tier I is here, Tier I is now and Tier 1 is the USHL.

What is Tier I?

The USHL’s leaders had a vision for the future and that vision was Tier I. Simply put, the USHL wanted to insure, through mandates and actions, that players would be immersed in the very best development program possible. Every league makes promises. The USHL wanted to make sure that the promises were kept.

Tier I regulations mandate minimum standards for coaching, facilities, education, off-ice player support and nearly every other manageable aspect of the junior hockey experience. The driving force of these mandates was the USHL’s desire for perpetual improvement. Read between the lines if you wish, but there were no secrets.

“This has been a long-term cooperative goal of the USHL and USA Hockey for nearly six years,” said USHL Commissioner Gino Gasparini. “The classification ‘Junior A Tier I’ means a great deal to all of us involved and to the future of the game. Our league’s goal has always been to provide the best path of development and this reclassification will ensure that we continue to meet and exceed that goal. Its further evidence that this league will never stop evolving or striving to make the best better.”

Why Tier I?

<place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">United States</country-region></place> has been debated and questioned for several years. The governing criteria of such a league, produced by USA Hockey in cooperation with several American Hockey policy makers, was first drafted in 1996. The USHL, with its recognition as the nation’s top Junior-A development circuit growing, grasped onto the idea. Gasparini lead the move, using discussions with hockey’s other power brokers to guide an edited version of the original criteria back to USA Hockey.

The resulting draft of the criteria was subsequently published in USA Hockey’s 2000 Annual Guide.
